Μοντέλα δημοκρατίας

Στo μάθημα θα εξετάσουμε τι σημαίνει «δημοκρατία» τόσο ως ιδέα όσο και ως σύνολο πρακτικών και θα συζητήσουμε τις κύριες αντιλήψεις περί δημοκρατίας από την κλασική αρχαιότητα μέχρι τις σύγχρονες μορφές της. Αρχικά θα ξεκινήσουμε με τη διερεύνηση των «κλασσικών μοντέλων» της δημοκρατίας, τις αρχαίες έννοιες και θεσμούς και θα φτάσουμε στις πρώιμες σύγχρονες φιλελεύθερες μορφές της, οι οποίες δίνουν έμφαση στη λαϊκή κυριαρχία και τον διαχωρισμό του δημόσιου και ιδιωτικού βίου. Φτάνοντας στον εικοστό αιώνα, θα εστιάσουμε στην εξέλιξη των κοινοβουλίων, της γραφειοκρατίας, και του πλουραλισμού. Θα δοθεί έμφαση στη διαβουλευτική δημοκρατία και τις προσπάθειες διεύρυνσης και ποιοτικής βελτίωσης της συμμετοχή των πολιτών στην πολιτική διαδικασία. Ο απώτερος στόχος μας είναι να διερευνήσουμε αδυναμίες και περιορισμούς των δημοκρατικών μοντέλων για να καταλήξουμε να συζητήσουμε με κριτική ματιά τι σημαίνει «δημοκρατία».
